Chapter 395 Was It All Just a Dream?

Her body felt heavy, disconnected from her mind. The harsh scent of disinfectant filled her nose, and the coolness of the air settled over her. She blinked again, squinting at the sterile white ceiling above her. \'Where am I?\'

Her hand moved instinctively to her abdomen, but there was nothing. The feeling that had once reassured her—that small, growing life—was gone. The absence hit her like a tidal wave, and panic rose in her chest. \'The baby…\'

Her fingers pressed against her stomach, searching for any trace of what had been, but the slight curve she had once felt was gone. It wasn\'t that she had been showing much, but the sense of carrying life inside her had become so familiar. Now, it felt like it had vanished into nothing, leaving only emptiness behind.

"Zheng Liang?" Her voice was a rasp, barely a whisper in the quiet room.

The soft material of the hospital gown shifted against her skin as she moved. It was loose, much softer than she expected, but nothing like the silken robes she had worn in the palace. She could barely feel it, its lightness a reminder of the empty space where her child should have been.

The door creaked open, and a nurse stepped in. She froze for a moment, surprise flashing across her face when she saw Fang Li awake.

"You\'re awake!" she said, quickly approaching the machines. "How do you feel?"

Fang Li\'s mind spun, her chest tightening as she tried to make sense of her surroundings. Her throat was dry, and her body felt foreign, sluggish. "Where... where am I?" she managed, her voice shaky.

The nurse gave her a soft smile. "You\'re in the hospital. You\'ve been unconscious for three weeks."

Three weeks? The words echoed in her head, but they didn\'t make sense. How could she have only been here for three weeks? She had lived as Yang Ning for over a year—lived through palace intrigue, fallen in love, and carried a child. How could it all be gone in three weeks?

The nurse noticed the growing panic in Fang Li\'s eyes and placed a reassuring hand on her arm. "I\'ll call the doctor. He\'ll explain everything," she said gently. "I\'ll also call your parents. They\'ve been waiting for you to wake up."

With that, the nurse hurried out of the room, leaving Fang Li alone with her racing thoughts. Her mind struggled to bridge the gap between the world she had just left and this one. Three weeks? She had been in the palace, with Zheng Liang... she had been pregnant, hadn\'t she?

She stared down at her body, her fingers curling against the fabric of her hospital gown. Her hand moved to her hair, tangled and unkempt, a far cry from the intricate, braided styles she had worn as Yang Ning.

Everything feels wrong.

She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to steady herself. \'Was it all a dream?\'

The door opened again, and the doctor entered, his white coat crisp as he approached her bedside, clipboard in hand.

"Miss Fang," he greeted her kindly, "it\'s good to see you awake. How are you feeling?"

"I... I don\'t know," Fang Li whispered, her voice weak. "Everything feels... strange. Empty."

The doctor nodded, pulling up a chair beside her. "That\'s understandable after what you\'ve been through. You were found unconscious in your dorm three weeks ago. You were severely intoxicated and had a minor concussion. It appears you hit your head on the edge of the bed when you fell. The combination of alcohol, exhaustion, and the concussion caused your coma."

Fang Li\'s brow furrowed. "But... I was pregnant," she murmured, her hand still resting on her stomach. "I... I was going to have a baby."

The doctor looked at her with a complicated gaze but responded assuredly. "It seems you\'re still confused after the coma. We\'ve done thorough checks, and you\'re not pregnant. It\'s common for coma patients to experience vivid dreams or alternate realities. Your brain was likely processing the stress and trauma you were under before you lost consciousness.

It created a detailed world for you to live in while your body healed."

Fang Li\'s breath caught in her throat, her mind racing. "No," she said, her voice trembling. "It wasn\'t just a dream. I was there for over a year. I felt everything—the baby, the palace, the people." Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke. "I lived it."

The doctor gave her a kind, understanding nod. "I know it felt real, but your mind is incredibly powerful. It was protecting you from the emotional and physical stress. The world you experienced was your brain\'s way of coping. It\'s normal for coma patients to be confused about their surroundings, and sometimes their identity. It will get better after a few days."

Fang Li stared at him, her chest tightening with each word. How could it be a dream? The warmth of Zheng Liang\'s hand, the way her body had changed to accommodate the life growing inside her—it had felt too real. It wasn\'t just something her mind could have made up.

However, after listening to the doctor\'s words, Fang Li was silent. Her thoughts were a tangled mess of memories, emotions, and confusion. \'Had her mind created the entire world? Or had she really lived that life as Yang Ning? Or was it, as the doctor said, just an illusion—a dream too real to forget?\'

\'But how could that be possible?\'

The possibility of her life as Yang Ning being a dream made her uncomfortable. The thought of not having Zheng Liang by her side, of losing the baby inside her, left her heartbroken. While she was trying to process the information, the door opened once more.

Her parents rushed in, their faces etched with worry and relief. Her stepmother moved quickly to her side, her hand gripping Fang Li\'s as though she were afraid to let go.

"Oh, sweetheart," Yan Mei whispered, her voice shaky. "We\'ve been so worried. Why did you drink so much? If you were troubled by anything, you should have come back home. We\'re your family—why did you drink alone in the room and hurt yourself?" She sobbed softly as she caressed Fang Li\'s hands, worry etched on her face.

Her father stood nearby, his face pale, his voice thick with emotion. "You scared us, kiddo. We thought we were going to lose you. Even though the doctors said you\'d wake up soon, it was hard to watch you sleep for so long."

The sight of her parents, their love and concern, made her heart ache with guilt. They had been here, waiting for her to wake up, while she had been lost in another world. Yes. She also had a family—the family who had been waiting for her.

Her father, her stepmother, who had given her maternal love and care all these years. Her younger brother, who was born to her father and stepmother, was closer to her than anyone. She missed them.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

Tears spilled down her cheeks. "I\'m sorry," she whispered, her voice barely holding steady. "I\'m so sorry."

Her stepmother squeezed her hand gently. "There\'s nothing to be sorry for, honey. We\'re just glad you\'re back. Everything will be fine now."

Fang Li looked down at her parents\' hands, the warmth of their touch grounding her in this reality. But her heart still ached for the life she had left behind—the love she had felt for Zheng Liang and the child that no longer existed.

Was it really just a dream? she wondered, as her family gathered around her. Was the life she had lived as Yang Ning just an illusion created by her brain? She wondered, feeling a wave of tumultuous emotions.

The question lingered in the air, unanswered, as Fang Li tried to reconcile the two lives she had lived.
